Senatorial Elections 2008 • Polling Day Wednesday 15th October
Elect PETER TROY for Senator
"After caring for our community for the last nine years, I look forward to your support as Senator on 15th October".
Dear Elector,
I have had the honour of serving the Parish of St Brelade for the last 9 years as a Deputy, and now put myself forward as a candidate for the office of Senator. If successful in the elections for Senator I will be seeking a Ministerial position either at Social Security or at Transport & Technical Services.
As Assistant Minister at Social Security I have had a good working relationship with the Minister and together we have successfully presided over what must be one of the biggest projects ever undertaken at Social Security, specifically the introduction of Income Support. We have taken 14 benefits and amalgamated them into a single benefit system and it has been a great success as nearly four thousand families now benefit from Income Support. I am pleased to have personally championed the introduction of the Carers Allowance within Income Support. At Social Security we have also introduced changes to the Employment Law, which have added to the protection that islanders in work receive. Regarding elderly care, I am keen to bring forward an insurance scheme or similar to provide for the cost of residential care for all so that none of us have to worry about how we pay for care provision in our old age.
As Chairman of St. Brelade Youth Club I have a keen interest in representing the views of young people, and supported the reduction of the voting age to 16, and am pleased that one of my seconders is a young man voting for the first time in our elections.
I have campaigned vociferously for a smaller incinerator and higher recycling rates than those proposed by Transport & Technical Services together with more effective recycling systems in place. Even if we receive the incinerator favoured by Transport & Technical Services we can still aim (like many European countries) for much higher recycling rates.
In my time as a Deputy there have been many challenges and I believe that I have served my Parish & island effectively. I hope that you share my belief that I have done my best for islanders and hope that you will consider giving me one of your votes as Senator on Wednesday 15th October 2008.
Yours sincerely
Peter Troy
